@@@We,the Karen Refugee Committee, can hardly find words to express
our deep appreciation and gratitude to all concerned,-the Thai aithorities
for their kindness in granting a temporary refuge to the Karen refugees,
allowing the aid agencies to provide the refugees with their basic needs
and providing some measure of security for the camp -and the individuals,
organizations and agencies for their kindness, assiatance and support,
in many ways, to the refugees in their time of trouble and need.
@@@In this report, we would like to make a special mention of the
emergencies assistance given by "HELPAGE" to victims of a flash flood in
Maela camp, and by the "ICS-Asia" and the "ABW Aid" for rebuilding the
school and church, respectively, washed away by theflood.
@@@The refugeepopulation is now stable, but we could not predict that it
would remain unchanged. Now is the begining of the dry season which has
been termed by the villagers as the season of "road-building" and
"voluntary-lobor". In addition to this, an increase in militaly activeties
would certainly make many thousands more to flee into the border area of
Thailand for refugee. One other matter in the threat by the so-called
Democratic Kayin Buddhist Army(DKBA) to attack some refugee camps if they
failed to move back to the other side of the border, by the end of this
year. It is our opinion that it would not be innappropriate if these camps
were relocated to safer places.
@@@We have never lost hope to return to our healthsand homes, but, as
we have reitarated on several occasions, our return should be to a free
and peaceful situation and with dignity and self-respect befitting a
human-being.
@@@It is our earnest hope and prayers that the authorities, agencies,
organizations and individuals would continue to provide help and support
to the refugees untill threr is stable peace and security on the other
side of the border and in the Union of BURMA.
